What is Adi Kailash famous for?

  • Adi Kailash is considered as a mirror image of Mount Kailash and a sacred site in Hinduism. 
  • In Hindu mythology, Adi Kailash is believed to be the dwelling place of Lord Shiva and a place where he meditated.
  • Legends say that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati spent time in this region, making it a symbol of their divine love and spiritual union.

Detailed steps:

1. Reaching Pithoragarh 

By train: Take a train to Kathgodam railway station.

By air: Fly to Pithoragarh airport.

By road: From Kathgodam, hire a taxi to Pithoragarh.

   Or

• Move to Haldwani bus stand from Kathgodam railway station to take a direct bus to Pithoragarh.

• The distance between Kathgodam and Haldwani bus stand is approximately 6 kms.

Or

• Move to Dehradun or Delhi as per your convenience, and take a direct bus to Pithoragarh from respected bus stand.


2. Reaching Dharchula

• Situated at a height of 940 m above sea level, Dharchula is a tiny, beautiful town in the lap of beautiful mountains of Kumaon Uttarakhand.

• Hire a direct taxi from Pithoragarh.

• The distance between Pithoragarh and Dharchula is approximately 92 kms.

In between you will enjoy the serene landscape and the beauty of the mountains.


3. Reaching Gunji/Nabi

Gunji is a small village situated at a height of 3200 m above sea level near India-Tibet border.

• Take a taxi from Dharchula to Gunji.

• From Dharchula, issuing the permit for the further process is compulsory as the destination is located at the India-Tibet border.

Gunji is the base station for travellers to Adi Kailash.

Mobile networks stop working as you cross Dharchula.


4. Reaching Jyolingkong to visit Adi Kailash 

• You will move in local jeeps to Jyolingkong to have the holy darshan of Adi Kailash.

• On the way to Kailash you will also see Kunti Parvat, Pandav Fort, Brahma Parvati, Pandav Parvat and Parvati Mukut.

• From Jyolingkong you will walk 3-4 kms to visit Parvati lake (Gauri Kund). 

• One may take a holy dip in Parvati lake and also bring some holy water in a bottle from this lake.

5. Gunji- Kalapani- Navidhang- Nabi (Om Parvat Route)

Om Parvat is another spiritual mountain near Adi Kailash.

The mystery of Om Parvat:

The snow melting on the mountain takes the formation of OM without any human-made structure on the mountain.

• You can start this hike at Gunji then moving to Kalapani, Navidhang and ending at Nabi, visiting Om Parvat.

Shows how melting of ice forms the shape of 'om'.


For Return journey move from your base camp to Dharchula, thereafter to Pithoragarh in a cab. From Pithoragarh you will get bus to dehradun and delhi and air facilities to your respected places.

Adi Kailash-Best time to visit

• The best time to visit Adi Kailash is during the summer (May to June) or during autumn (September to October) seasons when the weather is favorable and roads are accessible.
